In addition to the Newport Board of Commissioners, there are several other Boards comprised of Newport residents and business people helping to make decisions for the city. Meetings of all these boards and commissions are open to the public.
We appreciate the many individuals serving on the various city boards. The selfless dedication of time and talent from these members helps to keep things running smoothly and keep the city moving forward responsibly. Contact information for board members is not listed on this website. Individuals wishing to make an application to a board should contact the corresponding city department. Those who wish to speak as an opponent or proponent in any matter before a board will have an opportunity to state their position at the respective public hearing. If unable to attend a hearing, a written statement may be sent to the board chair in care of the city building in advance of the hearing. This ensures that the board is basing their decision only on what is presented openly at the meeting and all parties (applicants, proponents and opponents) will have equal opportunity to hear the same information. If you have questions about a pending matter or would like to know more about the boards you may contact the city building and speak with the Code Enforcement Department at 859.292.3637, Development Services (for Planning and Zoning or Board of Adjustments) at 859.292.3637, or Historic Preservation at 859.655.6347. If you are interested in serving on one of these boards, please complete the board interest form and return it to the City Clerk.
The following are regular "standing" meeting dates for these city boards for the year.
The Code Enforcement Board is comprised of five members and two alternate members serving two-year terms. The Code Enforcement Board meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. as needed. To confirm if there is a meeting being held, call 859.292.3637. Note: in January of 2012 the Exiting Structures Code Appeals Board and the Vacant Properties Review Commission were merged with the Code Enforcement Board.
The Board of Adjustments is made up of five members serving two-year terms. The Board of Adjustment meets on the third Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m. as needed. Public hearings before the Board of Adjustment to request variances or conditional use permits must be requested in advance through an application process at the city building. Hearings are published in advance as required by law through a legal notice in the Campbell County Recorder. To confirm if there is a meeting, call 859.292.3637.
The Planning and Zoning Commission has five members serving four-year terms and is joined by the city engineer and the city manager as an ex-officio member. The Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. as needed. To confirm if there is a meeting, call 859-292-3637. Click here for the agenda for the May 28, 2019 meeting.
The Historic Preservation Commission, comprised of seven members serving two-year terms, meets as needed on the fourth Wednesday at 6 p.m. For meeting information call Mr. Scott Clark at 859.655.6347.
The Urban Design Review Board, made up of three members and two alternates who are architects or designers that live or work in the city meets as needed. For meeting info call 859.292.3637.
The Newport Recreation Commission has three members serving four-year terms (this number follows a 2014 change to KRS 97.120 limiting membership to 3; past members and the public are still invited and encouraged to attend and participate at meetings) and meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. This outstanding group of volunteers is responsible for many of the activities enjoyed throughout the year by residents of all ages. Some of their regular events include the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, the Senior Picnic, and Monsters on Monmouth. The Recreation Commission welcomes your ideas and may sometimes need additional volunteers to help plan or prepare for events they host. Volunteers must be adults who are able to pass a background check. If you have suggestions or are interested in becoming involved, attend a meeting to learn more (you will not be required to attend every monthly meeting in order to help out). To confirm if a meeting is being held, call Ms. Colston at 859.292.3680.
The Newport Ambassadors Program puts volunteers in place at many events throughout the year to help welcome visitors, help facilitate events, and share our civic pride. If you would like to learn more or if you are ready to volunteer as an ambassador, contact Bev Holiday at 655-6341.
