At the Board of Commissioners meeting on June 19, 2017 two scholarship awards were presented. Wittney Hardin of Newport High School and Olivia Schalk of Newport Central Catholic High School (NCC) were awarded $1000 Scholarships from the Newport Professional Firefighters Local 45 I.A.F.F.
The Newport Firefighters award the non-renewable scholarships/grants-in-aid annually to a graduating senior from both Newport High School and Newport Central Catholic to assist with their post-secondary education.
Applicants must be a graduating senior in good standing with their respective school, maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and attend a post-secondary institution within one (1) year of graduating high school.
Hardin maintained a 4.288 Composite GPA, was the president of the National Honor Society, president of the Kelly’s Kids Program, and Gear-Up Ambassador. Hardin volunteered with the local Cub Scouts troop pack 855 and tutored children at Newport Middle School. Hardin will attend Western Kentucky University to pursue a post-secondary education in Photo Journalism.
Schalk maintained a 5.00 Weighted GPA, participated on varsity all 4 years in Track, Soccer, and Basketball, was a participating member in the National Honor Society, volunteers at Carmel Manor Bingo, and was a member of the Blood Drive Committee. Schalk has been accepted to attend Northern Kentucky University to pursue an education in Exercise Science. She will also be running for NKU’s Track Team.
